Just close you eyes and listen- quite possibly the purest performer, ever. The guitar, the voice, the lyrics- this was a live recording and he still puts the calm in you. If this doesn’t evoke some sort of emotional response, then check your pulse- or beter yet, check your conscience- He is the precourser to the Jack Johnson Mellow Man Show for those under the age of 30…

    absolutely true…

  9. wimpicker54 says:

The bar was definitely higher back then. How many people today can come out with a guitar, a chair and a microphone and totally mesmerize 5,000 people with no effects or help and deliver such a full, beautiful sound? JT has always been in a class all alone.

I am glad you cleared that up for them. Thanks from someone who has seen the Berkshires with snow on them and knows how dreamlike they can be.
Anyway, I never get sick of this song. It always gives me chills.

Real music before the hub cap music polluted the industry!

  15. afrisbeetom says:

his voice here has a depth like some
“country” singer…maybe his youth voice ?
whatever, i love this version. thanks.

  16. jooleyen says:

    This is correct.

  17. stevewik says:

he was driving to Boston to see his newborn nephew named James

  18. ohfergdnesssake says:

crispinflora & vince — The Berkshires are the mountain range in the western half of Massachusetts — not pigs (?!), not birch trees. In the song he is driving the Mass Pike (I-90) east from Stockbridge (in the Berkshires) to Boston in the winter, thus the “frosting” of early snow. If I can do anything for one of my favorite songs, it is clarifying this. And btw my horses live happily outside thru the New England winter – it is not abuse.

    it’s Berkshires, Ma. :o )

I named my son James after this song. He was still in my belly, and this song just came to me. My Baby James is almost 8 years old now, and he is very, very sweet indeed.

  23. stedrod says:

I’ve been covering this song since 1971–38 years. That’s a lot of Sweet Baby Jameses. But people love a great song from the heart and this is one.

  24. CrispinFlora says:

…perused it earlier and couldn’t get over it–LOL all those years that I was singing it –”frozen Swine!!” seemed dream-like—ha ha–in the Philippines (back then) English language was only used in school (not your everyday conversation dialect) and so attaining fluency in the dialect (English) is enhanced when one sings English songs; and that’s I did.

  25. vinceveritt84 says:

haha yeah a big difference indeed! the farmer wudve been charged with neglect had he left his animals out in the snow! lol
